What is Reverse Balayage?

Reverse Balayage is the opposite of traditional Balayage. Instead of lightening hair, it introduces darker tones and lowlights through the mid-lengths and ends while leaving the roots lighter. The result is a soft, dimensional look with a natural, lived-in feel.

By creating shadows and contrast, Reverse Balayage adds movement and texture to the hair. A shadow root is often blended into the colour, making the overall look more seamless and helping to extend the time between touch-ups.

More information

How Does it Work?

  • Creating depth and dimension: Darker shades are hand-painted onto the hair to add richness and texture.
  • Shadow root blending: A shadow root helps merge lowlights with natural regrowth for an effortless finish.
  • Lowlights for balance: From subtle partial lowlights to full lowlights, the service can be tailored to your desired look.

Our stylists at The Pamper Suite use AVEDA Full Spectrum colour, demi-permanent glosses and toners to personalise every detail, ensuring your colour suits your features, lifestyle, and maintenance preferences.

The Benefits of Reverse Balayage

  • Low maintenance: The shadow root softens regrowth, reducing the need for frequent salon visits.
  • Natural and lived-in: Creates a soft, blended effect rather than stark contrast.
  • Adds dimension to blonde: Rebalances overly lightened hair with richness and depth.
  • Less damaging: Especially on previously lightened hair, it’s gentler than repeated highlights.

Who is it For?

  • Blondes looking to add warmth or transition into a deeper tone for a new season.
  • Clients seeking low-maintenance colour with longer gaps between appointments.
  • Brunettes wanting added depth and richness to prevent flat or one-dimensional colour.

I had a fantastic experience getting highlights and a haircut with Paige. I wanted to brighten up my grown-out hair with a very natural, sun-kissed look, and Paige completely understood my vision. She introduced me to a new technique that lifts color using a special toner instead of bleach, which sounded much gentler on curly hair which tends to be drier naturally. Paige took the time to thoroughly listen to what I wanted for both the color and the cut. She nailed the curly haircut I was hoping for and finished everything off with a beautiful blowout. The entire salon had such a warm and welcoming atmosphere‚ all the girls were absolutely lovely. I left feeling fresh, confident, and so happy with the results!

The best hairdressers ever! I’ve been coming here for years and always had amazing service. Tracy is an exceptional hairdresser and the salon and all the staff are lovely. I would thoroughly recommend The Pamper Suite and personally wouldn’t go anywhere else 🥰

Frequently Asked Questions

What is reverse balayage?
Reverse balayage adds depth back into hair by painting in lowlights and blending the root, rather than lightening. It’s designed to restore dimension and soften grown-out highlights.
Will reverse balayage make my hair look much darker?
It can be subtle or more noticeable depending on how much depth you want to reintroduce. We usually keep strategic brightness so the result still feels light, just more balanced and natural.
Can reverse balayage fix harsh highlights or banding?
Yes, it’s often used to break up strong stripes and soften old highlight lines. By adding depth and then toning, the overall look becomes more blended and wearable.
How often will I need to refresh reverse balayage?
Most guests refresh the tone or gloss when it starts to fade, and revisit the lowlight placement less often. Your refresh schedule depends on how quickly your hair fades and how much contrast you prefer.
Do I need a patch test for reverse balayage?
If your reverse balayage includes permanent colour, you’ll need a patch test at least 48 hours before your appointment. If you’re not sure what will be used, we can confirm this when you book.
